Question
I can’t decide: should I get photochromic lenses or dedicated sunglasses? Which will protect my eyes better?
Answer
Photochromic lenses are a wonderfully convenient feature for everyday glasses wearers. All major lens manufacturers offer them, whether they employ Transitions® brand technology or others, such as Photofusion® byCarl Zeiss or Sensity® by Hoya, for a few examples. They darken automatically in response to UV light, meaning you can step outside without fumbling for a separate pair of sunglasses. For many patients, this feels like the best of both worlds. However, photochromic lenses are not a complete replacement for dedicated sunglasses, and understanding why can help you make a smarter choice for your vision and eye health.
The most significant limitation is performance inside vehicles. Car windshields are designed to block UV rays, which is the very light that triggers the darkening reaction in photochromic lenses. As a result, your lenses may remain nearly clear while you’re driving, even on a brilliantly sunny day. This makes them inadequate as a driving sunglass, leaving your eyes exposed to glare and brightness at exactly the moment you need protection most. Photochromic lenses also take time to fully activate and deactivate; they don’t switch instantly, although the speed at which they adapt to the amount of ambient UV has improved with each new generation of the technology. And while they do provide 100% UV protection even in their clear state, the level of tint they achieve outdoors or the physical size of the lenses in your everyday glasses may not block a sufficient amount of light for high-glare environments like the beach, the slopes, or open water.
For most patients, the ideal solution is both: photochromic lenses for daily convenience and a quality pair of sunglasses for driving, outdoor activities, and extended time in bright conditions. I recommend thinking of light-adaptive technology as a helpful additional feature on your primary pair of eyeglasses, not as a substitute for purpose-built sunglasses, when you discuss with your eyecare professional what sun protection options they would recommend for your particular needs.
