How Often Should You Have an Eye Exam?

The Canadian Association of Optometrists recommends adults (aged 20–64) have an eye exam at least every 2 years.

However, eye exam frequency depends on individual needs. Patients who wear contact lenses, have a family history of eye disease, or have a medical condition that affects eye health (such as diabetes) may benefit from more frequent checkups.

What to Expect During an Eye Exam

An eye exam includes various tests so we can provide detailed, personalized insights into your vision and overall eye health. Your routine eye exam typically includes:

  • A detailed discussion of your medical history & visual needs
  • An assessment of your vision & the performance of your visual system
  • An evaluation of your eye structures & eye function

By conducting a comprehensive eye exam, we can gain a comprehensive understanding of your individual eye health. This allows us to develop a personalized approach to support you.

The Connection Between Your Eyes & Overall Health

Looking into someone’s eyes can tell you a lot about a person—and that’s especially true for health care.

Many conditions that affect your general health are visible in the eyes, making comprehensive eye exams a valuable tool for preventive care. Medical issues like diabetes, high blood pressure, autoimmune disorders, and neurological conditions can be detected or monitored with tests performed during comprehensive eye exams.
