I got some new glasses with progressive lenses made to my current prescription about six months ago and they were working well. But over the last week I have noticed my vision is less comfortable than it was only a few months ago. Is it possible my vision has changed so quickly?
Answer
The short answer is yes, but there could be other reasons than a sudden vision change for glasses to work less well than they were previously. One thing to look at is how your frame is fitting, especially if your glasses recently got knocked, bent, or sat on. Your optical expert should be able to make any necessary adjustments to the angle, curve, height and so on in order to situate the frame optimally on your bridge and ears.
For example, if the bottom of the frame is sitting farther out from your face than it should be or your nosepads are splayed wide, you may have difficulty accessing the reading zone in the lower portion of the lenses.
Speaking of lenses, they should also be inspected for any degradation in the coating, as scratches or crazing can make them hazy to look through. Crazing can be caused by sudden temperature fluctuations, such as being left in a car on a hot day, or can occasionally just happen spontaneously. Your eyecare professional will be able to assess if there are any problems of this kind and advise you if your lenses need replacing.
If all is well with your frames and lenses and how they are positioned on your face, there is a chance that your vision has indeed changed, and it could be for any number of reasons; dry eyes, allergies, cataract development, blood sugar fluctuations, or medication interactions are only a few of the many possible explanations.
I recommend booking an eye exam and noting any recent changes in your general health, lifestyle, or medications so you can update your optometrist in case there is a link to the vision changes you’ve been experiencing. And of course, if you have eye pain or other unusual symptoms that are causing you concern, seek medical attention immediately, as time can be of the essence.
