I am considering getting eyelash enhancements of some sort for my upcoming wedding. What are the pros and cons of the various options from a health perspective?
Answer: Since the fashion for dramatic eyelashes has grown exponentially, I have noticed a corresponding increase in questions about the relative safety of various lash enhancement options. Unfortunately I occasionally have to treat complications from the use of them, too. Each approach has benefits and risks from an eye health point of view.
Getting eyelash extensions has become popular for adding length and volume, and involves attaching lashes to your natural ones with adhesive. While the results can be stunning, extensions can sometimes cause irritation or allergic reactions to the glue, particularly if you have sensitive eyes or skin. Additionally, the weight of the extensions may strain or weaken your natural lashes over time and can cause lash loss or dry eye with longer-term use. Strip lashes, an even more temporary option, are attached with glue or magnets directly onto your eyelids. While generally safe if used occasionally, improper application or removal can damage or irritate the eye area. Keep them fastidiously clean to avoid buildup of bacteria and debris, and always remove them before sleeping.
Lash tinting involves dyeing your natural lashes to make them appear darker and more defined. If you opt for this, ensure the dye used is specifically made for lashes and applied by an expert. Some individuals may experience allergic reactions to the dye, so a patch test beforehand is essential. The last option, lash serums, are formulated to stimulate the growth of your natural lashes. Prescription-strength serums such as Latisse that are available from professional offices like ours can be quite effective; however, they require lead time and come with some risk of side effects such as redness, itching, or even changes in iris pigmentation.
Ultimately, the best option depends on each individual’s eye health, sensitivity, and commitment to hygiene and maintenance. If you have any underlying conditions or concerns, consult your eye doctor before beginning any lash treatments, and be sure to give any approach a trial run well before the big day to ensure you will enjoy your beautiful lashes without compromising your eyes.
