Answer: Good for you for thinking ahead! There are many strategies you can use to
minimize the chances of having an eye-related medical mishap while on vacation. At
least a month before you leave make sure that you obtain copies of any prescriptions
for eyewear and medications that you use, and have on hand all the contact lenses,
prescription glasses, sunglasses, medicines, and eye drops that you will need while you
are away. If you don’t have a spare pair of glasses or a sufficient supply of contact
lenses, now is the time to order them, not a week before your departure. Although you
might be able to replace these items in a foreign country, running around an unfamiliar
place trying to buy a prescription item that may not be readily available can put a real
damper on your trip.

Air quality in planes and changes in climate can lead to dry, itchy, and sore eyes. If you
usually wear contact lenses, consider switching to glasses during the flight, or at the
very least, pack your contact lens case and a travel-size bottle of solution along with
your backup eyewear in your carry-on baggage. Bringing lubricating eye drops, or
antihistamines if you are allergy-prone, is also a good idea. Choose sunglasses that
properly protect your eyes from glare and UV radiation, especially if you will be
spending lots of time outside in a sunny climate, and if you will be visiting a pool protect
your eyes from chemicals and bacteria with swim goggles. Lastly, drink plenty of water
throughout the day to prevent dehydration, which can affect your eyes (as well as the
rest of you)!

Taking care of your eyes and making sure you pack everything you need will ensure a
more enjoyable and worry-free travel experience. Have a wonderful holiday!
